When it comes to fishing LRF style, there’s a vast array of lures available to the angler, with some even coming pre-soaked and packaged in their own scented liquid. Some baits look like a natural food source such as worms, small baitfish and crustaceans whereas others are totally nondescript but somehow work. Probably the most popular type of lures for the LRF angler are soft plastics, but other types of artificial baits such as spinners, plugs and jigs are also very popular and work very well given the right conditions and location.
I’m going to talk about the lures that I use or have used in the past and also other types that are available such as plugs, spinners and jigs
The supremely versatile worms are available in a range of colours and sizes, with their extremely lifelike bodies and action proving irresistable. I fish these on a jighead, drop shot rig or split shot rig and normally cut the worms down to around 2” in length.
These mobile, realistic crab baits from Marukyu are great for a wide range of saltwater species and come loaded with Marukyu's signature range of flavours and additives. I fish these either on a jighead or a sigle hook as they are heavy enough to be fished weightless.
These lures come in a vast array of colours and are pre-soaked in their own liquid. I use these predomintally on a small jighead, but they are also equally good fished on the drop shot rig and split shot rig. Great for all saltwater species
Not only do these life-like sandworms look great, they have a pretty impressive scent trail too. I cut these down and fish them the same way as I do with the Maruky Isome. You can also fish them whole if targeting larger species.
Fladen’s VERMZ Sandworm is a pretty impressive worm imitation specifically created to both mimic the look and flavour of natural baits. Similar to the Marukyu and Berkley scented worms, these are a slightly cheaper option.
These are small pots containing 8cm ragworm lures which have been impregnated with a special fish scent. They can be cut down and fished in a manner of ways. As with all scented baits, keep them in the pot with the lid secured tightly.
The Gunki Whiz is a great all-round lure for finesse style tactics, with the long tail vibrating at the slightest movement. A great all round lure for all saltwater predators, I use these on the split shot rig or a size 8 jig head. Great worked near the surface for garfish as well as deeper for mackerel and pollock.
Very similar to the Gunki LS Whiz, the LS Kiddy is another great all-round lure for finesse-style tactics. The split tail vibrates at the slightest movement plus these lures also have a slit along the back to assist in Texas style rigging. Great worked in flicks and pauses to resemble an injured bait fish.
This lure is a super dense soft plastic swimbait which is enriched with a craw and fish scented formula for added fish attraction. Very durable, it generates an extremely natural swimming action no matter what retrieve speed, thanks to its thin tail and ribbed body. Also available in a 3” version.
The Slug Shad has an unique slim form making it ideal for many applications such as micro jigging, drop shotting and bottom jigging. The slim form creates incredible feedback to the slightest movement of the rod tip. Great Texas rigged for wrasse, pollock and bass
Scented with Bait Breath’s BYS mix flavouring, the high density body is extremely supple and soft, but strong enough to help prevent tearing. The shads also feature a slot running along the top of the bait for Texas rigging.
The Nories 2.5" Inlet Shad has a slim body and a very realistic finish. Great fished with the drop shot rig or jighead rig, this lure can also be fished weightless on the Texas rig and worked around rough ground.
The Molix 2.5” Sator Worm features a ribbed body that tapers down to an ultra-thin tail and also has a unique spherical air pocket at the end of the tail that allows it to float up and wave seductively in the water. I fish these on a size 8 jig head.
The Sligo is enhanced with ultra-fine salt crystals and amino-acid scent so the fish will keep it longer after taking the lure. The extremely thin tail fin and fat body are responsible the Sligo’s killer, natural action. Great rigged Texas style for pollock and wrasse.
The thing I like about the Molix Sligozzo is the ability to be able to rig it sidewise or upright, depending on what you require. Great for all species, although I find it good worked around the kelp for wrasse and pollock.
The BloodTeez is a supersoft, flexible and incredibly life-like soft lure. I find these great rigged on a small jighead and bounced about the bottom for an array of mini species. Also great fished on the drop shot rig.
The Ring Worm has a ribbed body that ends in a curly tail section waving at the slightest movement. Rig these on a jighead or the Texas rig and work them around rough ground.
This is a fine-tailed worm with great movement and extremly natural action. Perfect for the jig head or drop shot rig.
